SQL Server: per core or server + CAL
SQL Server Standard can be licensed per core, with no CALs, or per server with a CAL for each user or device. Per core is simpler for web apps and large teams. Server + CAL is usually lower cost for teams of up to about 30 users. Enterprise is per core only. Core licenses are sold in 2-core packs with a minimum of 4 cores per server or virtual machine.
SQL Server 2025 or 2022?
SQL Server 2025 adds built-in vector search for AI applications, a native JSON type and higher Standard edition limits of 32 cores and 256 GB memory. Choose 2022 if your application vendor has not certified 2025 yet.
| Edition | Licensing | Limits |
